- The Rice Test: Helping You Choose the Right Breast Implant Size
The Rice Test
Deciding on the best implant size is one of the most important steps in planning your breast augmentation. If you have asymmetry – working out the difference between your breasts is also key to achieving a balanced result.
The Rice Test is a simple, at-home method that lets you experiment with different sizes in your own time in the privacy of your own home. While Mr. McLean will discuss your aims and objectives during the consultations, you will ultimately choose what feels right for your body.
At Enova Surgery, we want you to feel confident in your choices. This guide explains how the Rice Test works and how it can help you explore your options.
What Is the Rice Test?
The Rice Test is a temporary way to “try on” different breast sizes using rice-filled stockings or bags. By placing them in your bra, you can get a realistic idea of how different implant volumes may look and feel on your body.
Why Try the Rice Test?
- Helps you simulate sizes that feels right for your frame
- Gives you a better sense of proportion and balance
- Allows you to test different outfits to see how they look and feel (from casual wear to evening outfits)
- Useful for addressing asymmetry by finding the right volume difference
- No cost or commitment – just a useful way to explore your options
How to Do the Rice Test at Home
What You’ll Need:
- Uncooked rice (any type – basmati, long grain, brown, etc.)
- A pair of clean stockings or fine-weave tights (or pop socks)
- A kitchen scale (to measure rice by weight)
- A well-fitting non-padded bra (in the size you’re aiming for, or one that fits your larger breast if adjusting for asymmetry)
1. Calculate your desired volume
- Breast implant sizes are measured in cc (cubic centimetres).
- As a rough guide, 100-150cc is roughly one cup size, but this can vary depending on your frame.
- If you are unsure, start with 200-300cc and adjust from there.
- Note: you should have an idea of the sort of weight / volume you will be aiming for after your consultation with us
2. Prepare the Rice Bags
- Weigh out the rice (e.g., 300g ≈ 300cc).
- Fill each stocking with the measured rice – one in each foot of the tights
- Cut off the tights a few inches from the fill line and tie the end securely in a knot to make a tight ‘bag’ of rice. Mould into a rounded implant shape.
- For example, if you are trying two different sizes;
- You will make two rice bags with 300 grams and two with 325 grams.
3. Test the Size
- Place the rice bags inside your bra (position them where implants would sit).
- Move around, check in the mirror, and see how the size feels.
- Try different outfits to assess the look.
4. Adjust as Needed
- Increase or decrease rice to test different volumes, especially if you have an asymmetry.
- Take photos for reference.

Things to Keep in Mind
- The rice test is not an exact replica of implants (implants have different shapes/projections).
- Rice sits slightly differently than silicone/implants, but it’s a great starting point.
- If possible, try this with a strapless bra to see how the volume affects your natural shape.
