Why Your Bra Choice Matters

After cosmetic breast surgery (augmentation, reduction, or uplift), wearing the right bra supports:

  • Faster healing by reducing swelling and strain
  • Better scarring by minimising tension on incisions
  • Longer-lasting results by protecting your new contours

Ideal Post-Op Bra

Mr McLean’s Top Tips:

  • Buy 1-2 sizes larger initially (e.g., 36B if normally 34B) to accommodate swelling.
  • Use the loosest hook setting at first, tightening as swelling subsides.

Recovery Timeline

Weeks 1-6: 24/7 Bra Support

  • Wear your surgical/sports bra continuously(remove only for showering).
  • Opt for front-zip or clasp styles (easier to put on).

Weeks 6-12: Transition Phase

  • You can switch tosoft wireless bras for 12-16 hours/day.
  • Begin scar care (silicone tape) if incisions are fully closed.

3+ Months: Return to Normal

  • Underwire bras may be reintroduced if scars are healed.
  • Get professionally fitted—your size may have changed!

Where to Buy Quality Post-Surgical Bras

We recommend:

  • Lipoelastic PI Elite or Ideal (get 10% off at Lipoelastic with code MCLEAN10) and a breast stabilising band if anatomical or subpectoral placement.
  • Specialist retailers: M&S Post-Surgery Bras (wide underband, front-closing)
  • High-street options: Look for “post-surgery” styles at John Lewis, Bravissimo, or Amazon.

Key Advice:

Book a professional fitting after 12 weeks—many lingerie specialists have trained staff for post-surgical needs.

How can I find out my bra size after breast surgery?

During the consultation process, please ask for an idea which sizes to buy in preparation.

After surgery, most specialist lingerie shops, and some high-street shops or department stores, have experienced bra fitters who will use a tape measure to give you your exact bra size. As your shape and size may change, it’s a good idea to have your bra size accurately measured before you buy any new bras.  An experienced bra fitter will often have specialist training and experience in helping women who have had or are going to have breast surgery. It might be useful to call ahead and make an appointment to ensure you can be seen by a trained fitter.
