Why Compression Matters
After Surgery
Whether you’ve had gynaecomastia correction or gender-affirming top surgery, proper compression:
- Reduces swelling for faster healing
- Improves contouring for optimal aesthetic results
- Minimizes scar stretching (key for periareolar/scar visibility)
- Supports tissue reattachment to reduce seroma

Mr McLean’s Top Tips:
- It is worth buying a couple of spare vests for hygeine
- Buy two sizes: Initial (for swelling) and transition (weeks 3+).
Recovery Timeline
Weeks 1-6: 24/7 Wear
- Change dressings as directed (keep incisions dry).
- Wash chest compression vest every 2-3 days (hand wash, air dry).
- No showering until drains removed (if applicable)
- Can reduce to 23 hours at 4 weeks to allow showering and scar care
Weeks 6-12: Transition Phase
- May switch to lighter compression vests 12-16 hrs/day.
- Begin scar care (silicone tape) if incisions are fully closed.
12+ Weeks: Long-Term Care
- Gradually reduce compression (final contour settles at 6-12 months).
- Sun protection for scars (SPF 50+ to prevent darkening).
Choosing the Right Fit
- Your vest should feel firm but not tight – it should apply even pressure without cutting into your skin or causing numbness.
- If you notice excessive discomfort, skin irritation, or restricted breathing, contact us – you may need a size adjustment.
- It should lie flat across your incisions and not bunch or fold.
If you have two garments, rotate them so one can be washed while you wear the other.
